Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were was at the heart of a chaotic showdown in Saudi Arabia as Paris Saint-Germain squeezed past a Saudi All-Star XI 5-4 in Riyadh on Thursday evening.

Messi got the French champions off to the perfect start as he combined with Neymar to net the opener in just the third minute. Ronaldo, making his first outing in the Middle East, responded in kind after he won and scored a penalty to net his first goal in Saudi Arabia since his move to Al-Nassr.

Despite Juan Bernat being sent off, it looked as though PSG were set to head into the break with the lead after Marquinhos tapped home from close range. Ronaldo then got himself on the scoresheet once more minutes from the break with a clinical close-range finish.

Goals continued to flow as Sergio Ramos out the French side back in front only for Jang Hyun-soo to level matters just minutes later. Kylian Mbappe, Hugo Ekitike and Anderson Talisca rounded off the scoring to secure victory on a night that initially looked like it was going to be about one man.

In Cristiano Ronaldo’s head, this will be remembered as vindication of his controversial Saudi Arabia move.

His formal unveiling as an Al-Nassr player was a glitzy affair, filled with fireworks, fans and all the pomp and majesty he would demand. But as he made clear so often in his opening remarks, this was a move with football at its centre.

Having been made to wait to make his debut for Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s first game in the country came as part of an ‘All Star XI’ taking on Paris Saint-Germain - and ironically his old rival Lionel Messi.
